Wit Pimkanchanapong
Zodiac Maze
The small-scale works from the Infinite Maze and Octave Maze series by Wit Pimkanchanapong draw inspiration from the decorative Tung Sip Song Rasi (twelve-zodiac banners) in traditional Lanna culture.
The installation comprises 12 miniature kinetic panels crafted from aluminum frames strung with vibrant, multicolored cotton threads. Handcrafted by local artisans from Ban Sri Don Chai, Chiang Khong District, the color palettes of each panel are thoughtfully interpreted to reflect the symbolic nuances of the twelve zodiac animals.
The number twelve also connects the visual realm to music, mirroring the 12 chromatic pitches within an octave—C, C♯, D, D♯, E, F, F♯, G, G♯, A, A♯, and B. Each zodiac panel moves in synchrony with the corresponding notes of an original score inspired by traditional Tai Lue folk melodies.
